Rupture & Rapture

“Blossoms rupture and rapture the air”

This is a line from And I Was Alive by Osip Mandelstam, a poem written in 1937 and translated from the Russian by Christian Wiman.

The beauty of nature is both fierce and fragile: the destructive power of a tornado wrapped in the delicacy of flower petals. To create her installation Rupture & Rapture, Jessica Cadkin used hundreds of petals, deconstructed from silk flowers and hand-sewn together to form the piece’s shape. It rises approximately twelve feet from the floor toward the ceiling where the petals fan out; the petals flutter by the wind of a fan inside it as though by a gentle breeze.
